The
first lunch seminar on career development, organized by Steven Suo, Yibin Zhang
and Carin Lin, was held at East Buffet Restaurant, Flushing, NY on October 14, 2006. This
seminar was participated by about 23 ECUST alumni and their family members and
intended for sharing the life experiences from 5 panelists covering various
topics. It was great pleasure knowing our talent alumni have been successful in
the working area of their choices, as measured by their achievement, dedication,
level of responsibility and personal satisfaction as well.
James Chen, (VP, BB&T Capital Markets) advanced his career
using his background of both chemical engineering and MBA knowledge. His current
responsibilities as a financial analyst came from his active and positive
approach, which is always evaluate his own personal desires and strength and
know which area fits himself the best. His
road to success is really a reflection of active thinking and detailed
preparations before career advancement. A personal job satisfaction in a future working area largely
depends on realizing your own career strength and desire, as he said.
Jinfeng
Tang (VP, Asia Business Development, BlackRock
Financial Management Co.) addressed his career focus on Asian market using his
strength of Chinese background, both culturally and technically to earn him a
high competitive edge for being standing out and recognized for motivation to be
more involved in expending Asian business. He will move to Asia soon to help the
company expand business. He expects
this new choice would be a rewarding process for the many years to come.
Xiao-Chang Li, (Director of Materials & Device, Renewable
Energy Solutions Inc.) conveyed several excellent points regarding how to
survive in different working environment. His
international working experience and demonstrated achievement in both academia
and industry brought him a unique working philosophy.
Working with a joy and being helpful to others, could become a good
combination leading to the success of teamwork in a corporation, while good
communication skills and sound judgment in dealing with people and business is
the key for technical management. Good communication is more important than just
hard working if you would like to climb a corporation ladder, as he said.
Yike Ni, (Senior Research Scientist, Wyeth Research) shared his
story on how to change the career path from academia to industry and land the
first industry job. From CalTech to
Wyeth, his solid academic training in a prestigious university, hard working
attitude and healthy relationship with a research advisor gave him a quick and
desirable transition to pharmaceutical industry.
His messages to our young alumni: It will pay off to be competitive if
you work hard and are prepared for opportunities. He firmly believes these merits will continue to contribute
to personal growth.
Stephen Suo (Sr. VP, Trust Company of the West) described
his job approach in light of taking higher responsibility within the company.
Taking initiatives and being reasonably aggressive, as supported by the
skills in his field, helped him quickly climb on corporate ladders.
In this regard, he said that it’s equally important to build up the
personal visibility while realizing professional values to the company.
His willingness to go an extra mile along with good communication skills
made him stay ahead of his peers for job responsibility.
Thanks to the efforts by the organizers and various participants from
Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. This lunch seminar offered a
great opportunity for our alumni to express and share their successful
experience. The topics covered in
this seminar might be limited, but the driving force to bring alumni together
for active thinking and knowledge sharing goes far and beyond.
This seminar will spark more positive approaches to the quality of
working life that we have been searching for long time.
